Current Events II

Nicola Sturgeon, first minister of Scotland, "declared a climate emergency at the SNP (I.e. Scottish National Party) conference" (BBC News, 2019) after speaking to the climate campaigners and students who missed school on Fridays to strike against the issue of global warming. This week, parties are pushing the UK government to declare a national climate emergency. Sturgeon later explained how Scotland is a "world leader" (BBC News, 2019) by setting an example and goal of being completely carbon neutral by 2050, while the UK government's goal is "to reduce carbon emissions by 80% by 2050" (BBC News, 2019). Despite what politicians are planning, people are pushing to be carbon neutral by 2030. Overall, Sturgeon pledges to follow scientists and their predictions on global warming and advice on reducing carbon emissions.

This current event relates to the first current event, as well as the overall theme of discussing the importance and relevance of global warming today. This event of the first minister of Scotland declaring a climate emergency is the type of effect that the first current event was urging for. In the first current event, Greta Thunberg, Swedish activist, preached to the UK Parliament about the need to panic due to the limited amount of time available to retract the effect of global warming, before it is too late. As a result of Thunberg not only presenting her monologue on global warming to the UK Parliament, but the fact that it was all reported in the media, produced immense attention. Not only did she have the attention of the people, but the attention of politicians to act upon the request of the majority. Consequently, if it was not for the news report, video and overall media coverage, this issue may not have been taken seriously and simply brushed under the table.

Current Events I

In this past week, young 16-year-old activist, Greta Thunberg, gave a tear jerking speech at the European Parliament as well as the UK Parliament on climate change. Brave Miss Thunberg, holding back tears, preached to the MOP about the urgency to act upon the issue of global warming. When speaking to the European Parliament, she referred to the immediate attention the Notre Dame received just the day before and how this attention and energy must be transmitted to a more global issue - the global crisis known as global warming. She speaks to the UK Parliament about the never-ending promises of reducing CO2 emissions, in the country known for the start of the industrialization period, but the failure to commit to these promises. As she finished both of her speeches, she received positive feedback from the MOP, but she was not looking for gratitude on her moving speech or sympathy on what people have down to the Earth, but rather action. Whether or not her speech will be the catalyst for...

What The Experts Say II

This article by UN News provides a broader look at the environmental issue. Amina Mohammed, United Nations deputy security-general and expert, instructs the "UN, governments, private sector and civil society to work together in a more coordinated and integrated way" (Dpicampaigns, 2019) in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (I.e. SDGs) agenda by 2030, which is slowly approaching. The SDGs are an agenda of 17 global goals with specific targets in each category, created by the UN. Some of the categories that directly correlate to the environment include: clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action, life below water and life on land. At the ECOSOC (I.e. Economic and Social Council) Partnership Forum, Mohammed reminds the delegation of the importance of working together to solve these global issues. She stresses that "all stakeholders, big or small should ...
